Some people just don’t get it…

April 17th, 2008

I just read an email from a long lost friend - a college buddy, he was asking “how are you doing?”, “what are you doing right now?” and other normal stuff a long lost buddy would ask… After a few e-mails replied, and I’ve sent him the links for this website… then a question struct my attention and give me the urge of writing this article…

The question was “doing some MLM aren’t we?”… a simple question, but arises a deep question to myself…

Hmm… I just don’t get it… Whether he didn’t read my site’s content at all, or just that my articles / content are too confusing for a reader to understand??? - if this is the case, I would have to do something about it… But, I did highlight in the introduction page, and in article about pyramid and chain letter scheme…. I am NOT promoting it!!!

Hey, I’m not against people who joined MLM, pyramid or whatever get-rich-scheme out there, but I don’t want anybody connecting my site to these type of business. Yes, I have some ‘bad experience’ with those-kind, and in some cases I’ve just joined a scheme just because some friends insist on it, then I have even forget about the name of the scheme and the “investment” I’ve put on it… I just think of it as my “Introduction to Business 101″ course…

But after few of these experiences, I would rather stay away from those kind of business - no matter how big their check they’re showing off… and of course I would ask you and anybody I can reach for, to stay away from it.

Some people may still argue with me about this, some would say “their scheme are fair”, some says “this one is different”, “we want to help people”, some even use a religious figure/ a preacher to show how good their system, and how legal it is… Ok, actually I’m not the type of people who like to argue much, but I do stand for what I believe in, and I believe in something which I have studied and learnt from…

However, I just have to say this… no matter how fair a pyramid, MLM or these type of scheme may looks like, the upper level always have the upper hand, and the lower level is always get to be taken advantages from - even if s/he turned out to be successful in this type of marketing…

One thing for sure, there are some “Quality” in those people who succeed in this type of business, usually people with very convincing speech, people who don’t like to lose/tolerate in any arguments their involve in, having a lot of friends to follow what ever he’d be doing - “a men’s man”… and other characteristics which can be put to good use if placed in the right place… If you’re not one of it, just give it up man, or just consider yourself donating your money to your uplines..

So, is this site somehow promoting for MLM, pyramid, etc.? Just to be sure…

No!!… Some people have this narrow view of internet as “a cyber space full of porns, scams, viruses, free music/movie downloads (against copyright law), etc“.

I don’t blame them though, after few schemes and scams which have been largely publicized by mass media, and some states / countries have declared it as illegal, there are after-effect that peoples just see Internet Business and Internet Marketing as just another MLM, pyramids, and/or other illegal/unethical business programs…

Well, if you like to see it that way, it’s up to you… there are about 56 Millions of internet users in United State alone (2007 statistics), don’t you want to tap your hand in at least with Google Adsense??

Setting up your sitemap.xml and robot.txt

April 16th, 2008

In my website, I have mentioned how you can increase the chances of getting indexed in search engine, thus increase your fighting chances of being in Google search result…

http://www.yazlan.com/generate-traffic.html

I have mentioned on how to improve your traffic by using Google Webmaster Tools to increase your traffic. By now, you should have registered for Google Adsense and submitted your URL to Google. If not, submit it now

I have also mentioned how you would need to submit your sitemap.xml and robot.txt; basically to let Google know what your website structure looks like, and guide their robots to go through all the path in your website.

How do you create sitemap.xml?

You can create your sitemap file manually, but you may want to do it in easier way… Now I’ll show you how to create sitemap.xml… in a few simple step…

gsite-crawler

click picture to enlarge (in different window)

  1. First download the FREE SoftPLUS GSiteCrawler and install it.
  2. In the software interface, click “add new project” and follow the wizard instruction and it will crawl every pages connected by links in your domain. (You may choose to automatically upload the sitemap file to your host, or upload it manually)
  3. Click the refresh table button in “URL List tab”, and it will generate the list of URL of sites and pages in your domain. You may not want to include some URL (such as error page, payment or other private page), just uncheck the boxes.
  4. Then click the Google-sitemap file buttons. There, the software just create a sitemap.xml for you.
  5. If you did not check the “upload sitemap automtically” box in step 2, then get your sitemap upload manually by copying the sitemap.xml to the directory of your domain (in your web host) - by using your upload software i.e. FileZilla.

There, you have a sitemap.xml in you domain’s directory. Then where would you put robot.txt? How do i create one?

How do you create robot.txt?

Robot.txt is a file which telling a robot/crawler/spider visiting your page; what it should do and where it should go… (but some robotmay just ignore it). However most of good robot will follow the robot.txt instruction. You should place this file in your root directory of your domain if you planning to get noticed by Google, Yahoo and MSN (the 3 giants of search engine)

  • Create a *.txt file with your notepad, and save it to robot.txt file on your desktop.
  • Then copy this code and paste it in your robot.txt file

User-agent: *
Disallow:
Sitemap: http://www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml

  • Save the file and upload it in the root directory of your domain. That’s it… in a few days, you can see in your webhost visitor log, how many time this robots reading your robot.txt file (usually denoted by “+” sign)

Example of robot visit log in IPower webhosting

robot visit log

You’ll see the trace of robot visit in a few days… the more robots and frequency of their visits, the better it is for you. They want to see whether or not your site being updated, and update it their index. After uploads the sitemap and robot.txt, you’ll see the increases of hits as they now know where to look for your pages in your domain…

In future you may want to disallow certain robots or set frequency of their visit, but that’s another story… don’t worry about it yet…
